US 331 comes up from the Southeast and SR 55 comes up from the Southwest before they merge and run together for a short distance in Florala before they depart; SR 55 to the Northwest and US 331 to the Northeast.

This town probably got its name from the fact that it lies in Alabama but is the closest city in the state to Florida and besides it has an exotic ring to it. The Southeastern part of town lies along Lake Jackson, a large body of water half of whose expanse extends into Florida. It is Alabama's largest lake covering close to 500 acres. The 40 something acre Florala State park lies along the lake and has facilities for swimming, paddleboat rentals, fishing, picnicking and a modern lakeside campground. Each campsite has electrical service, water, sewage, a picnic table and grill and the campground is eqipped with a modern bathhouse with coin operated laundry facilities as well as a boat launch.
