The town of Independence has a population of 5700 people and is a rural residential community. The town has grown from what was a purely rural community with occupations centered around growing hay, grain and cutting timber to a well-equipped town with industrial belts, a school system, a police department, a fire department and a municipal court. The town has a Panther Valley Golf and Country Park that offers a glimpse of the beauty of hilly terrain. The town does not have it's own hospital but Hackettstown Community Hospital in Hackettstown is less than a mile away from the Municipal Court. Allamuchy Nature Park isn't too far away either.
