For a small town it's visited by some impressive roads; SR 161 goes through it, US 61 goes through its Southern part before moving along just to the East and SR 302 starts just to the North of it.
ABOUT THE AREA
This is just a nice small town in the Northwest corner of DeSoto county. The city was originally named Alpika, an old Chickasaw Indian word. The area only began to grow in the first half of the 20th century aided by the railroad which carried the cotton, soybeans, rice and corn crops. The city was the home of the Blues singer Memphis Minnie who was top female vocalist in the first Blue’s Unlimited Reader’s Poll in 1973 and who was elected to the Hall of Fame at the inaugural W.C. Handy Awards.
