ABOUT THE AREA
A Chickasaw Indian originally owned the area of Batesville; which he ceded to the Federal government by the treaty of Pontotoc Creek. When the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad laid tracks directly through Batesville it was the beginning of the end of Steamboat traffic which passed through the nearby towns of Old Panola and Belmont. Batesville soon replaced these towns as a business center. Subsequently, the Illinois Central Railroad bought out the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad and extended the tracks to New Orleans. This brought on the movement to Batesville of houses, business establishments and churches, from the other two towns, further spurring the growth of the new center of business and social life.
