US 56, on the Northern edge of town, is a convenient way to get places and most North-South streets in town intersect it.

If you are a Civil War buff, you would be interested to know that the fight between pro- and anti-slavery groups, the Battle of Black Jack, which occurred around 1856 east of Baldwin City, is recorded as the first such battle prior to the Civil War. This is a city of historic buildings. Baker University founded around 1858 and the oldest of four-year college in the state of Kansas, which is surrounded by the city, is the site of four of these which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Other historic sites can be found in the countryside around Baldwin City and the Nationally Registered Santa Fe Depot circa 1906 is located here.
