US 80 passes through Cloudcroft.

When the railroad was built between Alamogordo and El Paso, Texas; its owners sent a survey team to the mountains to the East of Alamogordo. The team was impressed with the wildlife, plants, trees and with the way the clouds blanketed the ground at the elevation of 9,000 feet above sea-level. As a result of their report an excursion train, the Alamogordo-Sacramento Mountain railroad, was built to the top of the mountain and the village of Cloudcroft was born. This small railroad line was abandoned in the late 1940's when the first highway to the village was opened. It has a population of about 700 and attracts many tourists. The village is in the Sacramento Mountains and the Lincoln National Forest. The area is conducive to hiking, mountain biking, fishing, down hill and cross country skiing. At 9,000 feet above sea level, The Lodge Golf course is one of the highest in North America. US 82 will bring you to this beautiful spot. The Sacramento Mountains museum and Pioneer village includes several old structures which provide a glimpse into the history of the village.
