ABOUT THE AREA
Tularosa located at the base of the Sacramento Mountains takes its name from the red or rose colored reeds you see along the banks of the Rio Tularosa. The original attempt to settle this village around 1860 was unsuccessful, however approximately two years later the area was settled by Hispanic farmers from the Rio Grande valley. The irrigation system developed by the farmers for there crops is still in existence and is used to water the trees along the streets, private gardens and landscaping in Tularosa. The original Tularosa Townsite District with over 180 buildings is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known as the City of Roses it offers trout and pike fishing at its best. For wine tasting go to Tularosa Vineyards and Winery at 23 Coyote Canyon Road. This village takes care of its kids. From June to August free lunch is provided to them in James Vigil park without any restrictions. Be sure to see the murals painted on many buildings in town.
