Fairway is a johhny-come-lately, having been incorporated around 1949. There are almost 4000 residents in this city so it is not small as cities go around this area. In the 19th century in oder to provide manual training for some of the American Indians who were displaced and whose ttaditonal way of life was coming to a close; the Shawnee Mission was established. Boys and girls from Shawnee, Delaware, and other Indian nations attended this choll from around 1839 to around 1862. Exhibits with their dispays tell the story of the Johnson family, Indian agents and missionaries, Kansas settlement, Bleeding Kansas, Overland trails, and the Civil War. Other exhibits feature woven baskets, beadwork, drums, and other folk art to tell the story of the Indians in Kansas such as the Iowa, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, and Sac and Fox. Many of these objects have been handcrafted using techniques passed down through generations of Kansans with American Indian ancestry.

Actual court session is held in Fairway City Hall located at 4210 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Suite 100. US 56 and US 169 run together through Fairway where they are known as Shawnee Mission Parkway.
