The village of Great Neck is primarily a NYC suburb on LI's north shore. Settled in the 1640s and incorporated in the early 20's. Population closing in on 10K. While this is the village of Great Neck, there are a number of other villages that are considered a part of the area known as Great Neck. This can be a bit confusing but the locals seem to understand. The US Merchant Marine Academy is located in nearby Kings Point. Great Neck was originally called "Madnan's Neck" and was settled not long after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in the late 17th Century. Jazz Age novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck and set his famous novel, "The Great Gatsby" in this area. Other famous residents include Sid Caesar, George M Cohan, Kenneth Cole, Francis Ford Coppola, WC Fields, The Marx Brothers, Whitey Ford, Paul Newman, Eugene O'Neill, Herman Wouk, automobile founders George Dodge and Walter Chrysler and many others. The whole Great Neck name thing probably has nothing to do with body parts and more to do with geography.
