US 281 runs through town, meets SR 204 in the center of town and Turns to the East where it meets US 36 at the Northern edge of town.

Two immigrants from West Prussia Germany started their Old Dutch mill around 1879, but it was four more years before they put into operation. Corn meal, graham flour and wheat flour were produced and packaged for sale to homes. Its home is now at Wagner Park. Nearby you can find another structure from the past. The Higley Cabin was home to the composer of the song "Home on the Range" around 1872. A few miles West of Smith Center you will find the monument commemorating the great Indian battle of 1832 between the Pawnee, Delaware and Omaha Indians on the one side, and the Cheyennes, Comanches, Arapahoes and Apaches on the other. The casualties of this battle were immense with a total of over 5,000 dying on both sides.
