COMMENTS
SR 255 comes through town as Cathedral Avenue and meets Old Hway. 40 in the Southern part of town. IS 70 lies slightly North of the city.
ABOUT THE AREA
The town of Victoria began as two distinct communities. The first community, Victoria, named after Queen Victoria and founded by Scottish immigrants around 1873. They hoped to bring British agricultural methods and a genteel way of life to America. They failed in these attempts but did bring Aberdeen Angus cattle to the area. Their leader's house still stands in the area. Construction of the Kansas Pacific Railroad through the area was significant in establishing Victoria as a town. The second community, Herzog, was founded around 1876 by families of German immigrants from the steppes of Southern Russian who were unhappy with the Czar's military prescription and fearful of the Russian attitude toward their Catholic and Lutheran faith. They settled here to establish a new farmland for themselves. By around 1880, most of the Scottish immigrants left and Herzog took over Victoria forming one town.
