COMMENTS
SR 2 enters Kiowa from both the West and the North to meet SR 8 which enters town from the South.
ABOUT THE AREA
The city of Kiowa was first established as a village along the west bank of the Medicine Lodge River. The city lost its chance to be a railroad stop due to the unwillingness of the townsite owners to donate land to railroad officials for a depot and trackage or to allow them a 50-50 division of the townsite. Land was purchased from a rancher, who owned a sizeable amount of land on the southern borders of Barber and Harper counties, by a new hastily formed town company who laid out a townsite southeast of the original village and granted railroad officials land for a depot and stockyards in what was known as New Kiowa. There are some nice old buildings in town worth seeing. The old City Hall and Fire Station are now an historical museum and the old jail is in the back. The railroad station is a fine old building also worth a look and the building across the street from it may have been an old railroad hotel or sure looks like it.
