With US 81 and US 160 passing through the city, its residents can conviently travel to all points of the compass and US 160 intersects IS 35 in the East.

The city was named for the Duke of Wellington and designated as the permanent seat of Sumner County around 1872. Today the primary input to the economy is the production of wheat; however the railroads and petroleum are also significant drivers. However it wasn't always that way; the early economy of the town was based on trading with cattlemen moving their herds up the Chisholm Trail. The city has ten parks in its park system providing every imaginable activity for the enjoyment of its residents including the Family Aquatic center. Tucked away in the Western part of town is the Wellington Golf Club with its 18 hole tree lined golf course reaching over 6200 yards.
