Founded around 1813, Barboursville soon became a busy town of commerce and politics and visited by boats running on the Guyandotte river, became an industrial center as well. However when Huntington became the county seat and railroads and highways passed it by, the city settled into its role as a quiet, residential setting of historic homes and figures. Barboursville has a park in which you can get lost and satisfies most peoples recreational needs. Covering over 750 acre, it has baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, little league baseball fields, midget football field, fishing lake and ponds, picnic areas, an amphiteater, walking trails, horse show ring and an archery range. The park also has several picnic shelters equipped with electricity and a barbeque grill, available for reservation, four of which have a capacity of close to 150 people.
