ABOUT THE AREA
In the early 1800's a stage coach stop was established in the area and as 1870 approached a post office opened as Mud Bridge, Virginia. Around 1873, service on the C & O railroad was officially opened from Huntington, West Virginia to Richmond, Virginia. This established Milton as a shipping point for lumber, ties and tobacco and a reception station for goods and materials needed by the community as far away as Mason County. Around 1874 the Mud Bridge post office closed and a new Milton post office opened. Families around the area started coming to Milton to have their grain ground at the grist mills here and to have their wool carded. Milton's economy grew significantly with the arrival of new merchants, sawmills, planing mills, hotels and a controversial saloon. Two years later, with a population of less than 100 people, the town applied for and received a certificate of incorporation.
