Not much in the way of big roads here but SR 16 will serve the purpose.

The first settlers came to this area in the 1850's but the city was not incorporated until around 1920 and was known as Miner's City at the beginning of the 20th century. At first there were several small mines near the town from which the coal was taken away in horse drawn wagons. After the Norfolk and Western railroad came during the first decade of the 20th century the town continued to grow into the 1950's. Business thrived and almost anything that one wanted to purchase could be secured in town. By the late 1960's when mines began to close as a result of less of a demand for the bituminous coal of southern West Virginia; the population of the city declined and businesses closed and left town. Now, there are many things you cannot buy in town and must go elsewhere to procure. Just South of War is a great place to relax at and forget your troubles, Berwind Lake Wildlife Management Area an area of rugged mountain terrain covering more than 18,000 acres with a lake within. The lake area has picnic areas and a swimming pool and there is land for camping and the fishing is good in the lake. , with less demand and with mines being closed all over the County, the city began to decline in population. Berwind Lake Wildlife Management Area, a state-owned recreational area that was built during 1958-59. The park offers swimming and fishing.
