There is a tendency to speed when you drive on a US highway, but when you're on US 291 or SR 63 in Ronceverte take it easy.

Ronceverte is a French word meaning Greenbrier; so you might say that the city, settled around 1775, was named for the county. The city's location on the Greenbrier river played a part in its becoming the transportation center for the county from the 1870's until the middle half of the 20th century. The largest hardwood producing sawmill in the world was located here from 1880 until the early 1920's. The train depot in the heart of town built around 1914 is the only Craftsman style building remaining on the railroad line. Although the original passenger canopy and baggage building are still intact; passenger service ceased around 1974. The American Heritage Music Hall is the scene of open jamming sessions and live entertainment performed by local musicians as well as dancing.
