COMMENTS
Judge Reardon ran a drug court, but may have retired. ONeill took heat for some rulings that were seen as pro-defense and anti-police. So he was probably right and they don't like that.
ABOUT THE AREA
Barnstable County has over 200,000 residents spread over roughly 15 towns, including a bunch of villages. It is a metropolitan area not far from Boston and is essentially Cape Cod. The area has had an increase in population since the early 21st century. People from the Boston area have been moving to smaller towns. Many people have second homes in the area to enjoy the summer months closer to Cape Cod. Real estate sales have increased over the last 10 years and many contractors are developing new housing. The area also has many recreational activities and tourism is an economic mainstay.
JUDGES
Honorable W. James ONeill was moved here from Nantucket after a bunch of complaints.
PROSECUTORS
Traffic cases in MA are often prosecuted by a "police prosecutor". We think this is a non-lawyer police officer, and the arresting officer may not even have to show up. Michael OKeefe is the District Attorney for the region.
TYPE OF CASES
Criminal cases, plus civil, housing, juvenile, mental health - that's a lot on their plate.
