COMMENTS
Us 199 is a road that wiggles around a bit and meets SR 7 in Morgantown. IS 68 lies just to the East and IS IS 79 to the West.
ABOUT THE AREA
The area that is now Morgantown was fought over by several groups, settlers and native Indians and the English and the French, until the Treaty of Paris in 1763, decided in favor of the English. However skirmishes with the Indians continued for several more years. All these skirmishes led to the building of several forts in the area up to the beginning of the American Revolution; Fort Pierpont towards the Cheat River, Fort Coburn near Dorsey’s Knob, Fort Morgan at the present site of Morgantown, Fort Dinwiddle at Stewartstown, Fort Martin on the Monongahela river, Fort Burris in the Suncrest area of Morgantown and Fort Kern in the Greenmont area of Morgantown. Around 1772, the town was settled by a gentleman for whom the town was named, who was the recipient of the charter for the establishment of the town to be called Morgan’s Town. This led to present day Morgantown's founding. One of two early structures in Morgantown still standing is the old Stone House on which construction was started in the 1790's. The other is the John Rogers house circa 1840, which is now a funeral home. Today Morgantown is home to West Virginia University and has a population close to 30,000 and covers an area of about 10 square miles.
