ABOUT THE AREA
The McCoy-McMechen Theatre & Museum, also known as McCoy's Grand, was built around 1927 by the McCoy family. A provision in the owner's will kept the theater from being torn down or remodeled. The building, which is in Moorefield’s Historic district, presents performances of community and local talent. The museum consists of a showroom and parts of the lobby filled with items from Mrs. McCoy's antique collection in what was originally a retail space. Over the years retail businesses were not an unusual sight in areas of the theater. The Maslin-Gamble House is another old house, circa 1848, in the historic district which is still standing. The original owner of the home was a justice of the county court who was a strong Confederate sympathizer, and thought to have hidden many Confederate sympathizers in the homes cellar while the town was in Union hands during the Civil War. Some years later, after the original owners death, it was sold to a lawyer and House of Delegates member whose name was added to the house.
