COMMENTS
SR 34 or IS 64 are the roads most often used by residents of Hurricane to get to other towns.
ABOUT THE AREA
This city first got its start when a party of surveyors commissioned by General George Washington came to the area. Hurricane is a strange name for this town since folks around here never experienced one. Or maybe the kids feel like one when riding the tubes at the Waves of Fun water park. More likely it was due to the fact that in their travel down the Kanawha river, the surveyors sent by Washington noticed that the trees at the mouth of the creek were bent in the same direction leading them to call the location "the place of the hurricane". At first the town was called Hurricane Bridge and eventually it became a stage coach stop and a thriving livestock market center. In the early 1870's completion of a single track railroad connected the waters of the Chesapeake and the Ohio River. As a result the town was relocated, and the name changed to Hurricane Station. However, when the city was incorporated around 1888 it was certified as Hurricane. History Row in the center of the city is the site of the Caboose museum which exhibits historical artifacts and railroad memorabilia.
