IS 635 intercepts IS 29, which runs through the Eastern part of Houston Lake, at the Southeast corner of town.

Around 1880 the second owner of land in the area built a dam across Jumping Branch creek to make a farm pond. After several washouts he turned the creek into a lake covering approximately twenty acres. When it was recorded with the county it was known as Lake Venetia. Around 1930, the new owner of the land, who had purchased it in the late 1920's, hired an engineering firm to design and supervise construction of a new dam which became the present day lake. He also plotted and subdivided the property calling it Venetian Gardens. In the mid 1950's it was incorporated as Houston Lake and the lake was given the same name.
