ABOUT THE AREA
Native Americans had been in this area for hundreds of years. Thirty-two years after Lewis & Clark passed through on their way west, the town of Glasgow was established and the early economy was based on hemp and tobacco plantations. At present Glasgow ships large quantities of corn by river barge and rail line. Glasgow is one of the few towns left with its commercial business district right on the riverbank. Stump Island park, located on the Missouri River, is so named because the Lewis & Clark expedition referred to it as the island covered in stumps. This park in addition to its large shelter houses has RV campsites with electric hookups, a dump station, a modern bath house with hot showers and a newly renovated boat ramp with access on the Missouri river. Kuemmel Park has rolling hills and a landscape worth seeing. In the park there are shelter houses, tennis courts, a basketball court, softball fields, walking trails, new playground equipment, new skate park and the city swimming pool.
