ABOUT THE AREA
Early settlers began arriving in this area around 1827 after the Osage indians had been moved from Jackson county. Around 1832 the first cabin was built in the city followed around four years later by a log store and approximately 4 more years a mill was established to the west of town. One year later a saw mill was built near town and soon large numbers of people from North Carolina and Tennessee started settling in the area. The Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield, Museum & Soldier's Cemetery is an interestin place to visit. The Soldier's cemetery is unique in that the the soldiers who died during the battle here are buried on the battlefield. The museum is built in the round of native stone. Displays here include artifacts from the Battle of Lone Jack, items of local history and photos of the soldiers who took part in the battle of Lone Jack. There are dioramas of the Battle of Lone Jack, the battle of Westport, General Order #11, which commanded and required all the citizens of three border counties, and a part of the fourth, to vacate their homes and move into garrisoned towns, and Quantrill's burning of Lawrence.
