COMMENTS
SR 100 and SR H only come into the Southern part of Hermann but they both meet SR 19 which runs through the whole town.
ABOUT THE AREA
A group from the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia founded the city in the 1830s and was plotted when the society sold shares in the over 11,000 acres of Gasconade River valley land they had purchased. The society's goal was to a establish a "heart of German-America" where they could continue traditional German culture in a self-supporting colony built around farming, commerce, and industry. When a group of residents set out to rebuild the wine industry in the 1960's, a number of wineries were established in the area which continue to operate to this day. Two festivals are very big in this city, Maifest and Oktoberfest. The Hermann Farm and Museum consists of five learning areas which are representations of an early German settlement; a model vineyard and winery, a livestock farm, artisan demonstration sites, a German-style performance and event facility, known as the Hofgarten, stables, wagon building shop and a children’s garden. The historic Hermann's Museum is located in the old German School built around 1871. The museum consists of rooms that portray life in Hermann since its founding in 1836, including the Heritage Room, the Kinder Room, the Schweighauser Room, the Legacy Room, the Els Room and the River Room. A Clock Tower was added to the building around 1890 and requires winding twice a week.
