IS 44 runs through a part of Kirkwood in the Southeast corner, IS 270 runs through the Southwest corner, SR 100 runs through the Northern part of town and Us61/US 67 run right through the center of town.

Kirkwood which started as city around 1853 is now a city with a sizable population living in approximately nine square miles. The historic Kirkwood train station, built around 1893, was on the verge of being closed down by Amtrak when the city purchased and refurbished it. One of the gems inherited was a cast-iron-and-wood, 100-year-old railroad scale. The scale has been restored and is on display at the station which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the downtown business district is also listed on the Register; many new businesses and restaurants have opened in it in the last few years. If you want to sample some delicious peaches come to the Kirkwood Farmers' Market Peach festival held on a Saturday in mid-July. There's a competition for the best locally grown peach and live music all day long. There is another festival held in town, the Greentree festival, lasting three days in mid-September with a parade, arts and craft booths and lots of music. The Kirkwood Recreation Station Ice Arena is a place you can go to skate at even in the Summer, it's open all year.
