Manchester road (SR 100) is the main road through Maplewood.

Around 1752, an immigrant from Switzerland first settled in Illinois then moved on to St. Louis where he met and married the daughter of one of St. Louis's founding families. He petitioned the Lieutenant Governor to grant him a tract no less than a league, or three miles square which includes much of present day Maplewood. Around 1819, two brothers from New Jersey settled in the area and made iron nails, iron tires for wooden cart wheels, iron ploughshares, harrow teeth, iron railings and iron locks. One of the brothers purchased a portion of the land from the heirs of the original grantee. His grandchildren sold the land which was then divided into blocks and lots of a new subdivision named Maplewood.
