ABOUT THE AREA
Before the settlement of Raton, coachmen on the wagons which traveled the Santa Fe Trail through the mountains over Raton Pass probably passed by the site of this town. Arrival of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad really started the settlement of Raton. In the downtown area of the town's registered Historic District you can still find buildings that were built prior to 1900 and are in use today. You can see these during one of the walking tours of the area. Vermejo Park Ranch is a very large deeded ranch which is especially attractive to hunters and fishermen with 8,000-10,000 elk and 3,000-4,000 deer and lakes annually stocked with trout. Enjoy Climax Canyon Nature Trail in Climax Canyon Park. For a nice round of golf try the Raton Municipal Golf course.
