US 50 Bypass and SR 87 cross just about at the center of the city's boundaries.
ABOUT THE AREA
Around 1834 the first business established in a new city, known as Boonsborough, located East of the present city was a blacksmith shop. When Moniteau county was established in the 1840's, the court was unwilling to pay the price of the land needed for the county seat at this site. The county seat was then moved West to its present location and renamed California to avoid conflict with another city with the Boonsborough name and laid out on approximately 50 acres of land. Around 1858 the Pacific Railroad came through town. The Cultural Heritage Center is the site of the headquarters of the Moniteau Historical Society and its museum which has exhibits related to Native Americans and the Lewis & Clark expedition. The Eitzen House which was built shortly before the end of the 19th century is certainly intended to keep out all weather elements; its outside walls are over 20 inches thick and its inner walls are close to 15 inches thick. The house has steam heat and private water works and is now a private residence.
