For a view of private homes built in a variety of Victorian styles between 1870 and 1910 you can take a self guided tour through the historic district which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These homes were once owned by quarry-men, mine owners, merchants and other entrepreneurs who lived in this city. But first be sure to pick up your brochure and audio commentary at the Carthage Visitor's Bureau. A good part of Municipal Park, built by federal work projects during the Depression, is built of native stone or rock. The facilities in this park include a skating rink, swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, Kiwanis Kiddieland, Carl Lewton stadium, and scenic picnic shelters as well as an 18 hole golf course. One of the city's historical parks, Carter Park, has gates which are a memorial to the Battle of Carthage and picnic shelters and playgrounds. The Fair Acres Sports Complex has baseball, softball and soccer fields.
