ABOUT THE AREA
Among the settlers of Scot, Irish, English and Welsh descent who came to Willard, was one who built the first home in the city around 1860, about three years after he arrived in the area. In the 1870's with the large land grants given to railroads by the congress of the United States; the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad laid the first track of line running through Willard. Activity on the rail line through Willard grew to where three passenger trains and two freight trains per day stopped in the city. With the people, goods and mail the railroad brought to the city and the shipment of agricultural produce to outside markets, the city's economy and population grew and flourished.
