SR 153 and SR 162 run through and meet in Gideon.

At the beginning of the 19th century, two brothers owned most of the land in this area and there were deer, wild hogs, opossums, coons, wildcats and bears everywhere.. Gideon was also once the place where hunters and trappers roamed and settled from time to time. Around 1900 two businessmen came to Gideon to build a sawmill. Their company first called the Clarkton Lumber Company later became the Gideon-Anderson Lumber and Mercantile Company upon which of the town's economy depended and which in World War II was the leading manufacturer of wooden boxes in the United States. Shortly after the formation of the company it started building the town with with two stores, a charcoal factory and the arrival of a railroad. The company no longer manufactures wooden products and the town has largely become a suburban residential community.
