ABOUT THE AREA
The earliest settlements in the area were founded along the Natchitoches Trail, an old Indian Trail west of what is now Poplar Bluff in the early 1800's. However when Butler County was organized around 1849 Poplar Bluff became the center of population. The annual Black River Festival is held during the first week of July at Ray Clinton Park. Featured events at the festival are a carnival, live entertainment, a demolition derby, tractor pulls, grandstand events, a parade, bull riding and a fireworks display at the downtown Black River waterfront. The Butler County Fair is held almost simultaneously as the festival. It has a BBQ cook-off, beauty pageant, Fourth of July parade and fireworks, Bull Fest, tractor/track pull, team roping, yard sale and trade show. The R.W. Huntington Municipal Swimming pool is another aquatic center in Poplar Bluffs. The Margaret Harwell Art museum is named for its benefactor, a Poplar Bluff business woman and civic leader who left her estate to the city to establish an art center and museum. Its exhibits are continually changed and include nationally and internationally known artists. The museum regularly stages exhibitions such as a mail-in art show, a photo competition and a juried artist's guild exhibition. Held at in Downtown Poplar Bluff the first week of July, this event features and much more fun for the entire family. For more information call 785-7474.
