ABOUT THE AREA
Capitan was founded in the 1890's. A black bear cub rescued from a fire here in 1950 became the real life version of the United State Forest Service symbol. This is the home of Smokey Bear Historical Park which is Smokey's final resting place. The visitor center has both indoor and outdoor exhibits and an amphitheater. There is even a Smokey Bear's museum here, a one room building packed with Smokey memorabilia, photos and posters of his life history. Take a look at the scrapbooks loaded with Smokey's achievements chronicled in newspaper clippings, magazine articles and fan letters. Each year, on July Fourth weekend the town holds its Smokey Bear parade and Stampede rodeo complete with a Nightly Western Swing dance and fireworks display.
