The Historical Museum is a former 1903 schoolhouse and has indoor and outdoor exhibits. The indoor exhibits are spread over 3 floors and has on display artifacts and memorabilia representative of the surrounding area and rooms are based on themes. You will see such items as a collection of used cowboy boots, a bucket of colorful cow-patties, piles of family scrapbooks, bootleg liquor stills and a roulette wheel. Outdoor exhibits include the Tucumcari Firehouse No. 1, a Southern Pacific caboose, an original ranch chuck wagon and the Herman H. Moncus Memorial annex has additional exhibits. The old train depot is part of Rock Island-Southern Pacific and now houses a railroad museum. An ongoing project in Tucumcari is the painting of many of the old gas stations in town in their original colors and styles and adding eye-catching art work to the walls.
