ABOUT THE AREA
Around 1901, populated by saloons and outlaws the trouble filled railroad camp of the Rock Island railroad became Tucumcari. A small settlement to the North, Liberty, soon moved lock, stock and barrel to this new location bringing merchants, gamblers, saloon keepers and dance hall girls. At first the camp was named Douglas, but one year after a group of businessmen donated 120 acres of land for use as a town site the name was changed. When the first passenger train came to the city in the Spring of 1902, it ushered in a period of settlement by homesteaders. Later growth was prompted by the arrival of Route 66 and the damning of the South Canadian river creating acres of irrigated farmland. Tucumcari has often been used for scenes in TV shows and movies and mentioned in many songs. There's a Community College, Convention Center, Art Galleries and a library are located here. Lakes in the area are a great place for fishing.
