ABOUT THE AREA
There are 900 historic structures, including Victorian homes, here that are on the National Register of Historic Places. One of these is Ilfeld auditorium. This sandstone example of romanesque revival architecture, circa 1914, is the site of New Mexico Highlands University’s performing arts productions in addition to showing the latest films. The one time premier railroad resort hotel, Montezuma Castle, later became a Jesuit monastery and then found a benefactor, Armand Hammer who restored the structure. The United States location for the international United World College is now located there. Nearby Storrie Lake State park has places to fish, picnic, watch birds, catch sight of wildlife and windsurf. The park has several campsites equipped with utilities suitable for RV's.
