ABOUT THE AREA
Settlers first came to the are of Neosho, Indian dialect for clear or abundant water, in the early part of the 19th century. There are nine springs within the city limits. Neosho was chosen as the county seat of Newton around 1839. Three railroads, Atlantic and Pacific around 1870, Kansas City-Fort Smith and Southern around 17 years later and Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad around 1908, came to Neosho boosting the economy of the city. The Kansas City-Fort Smith and Southern railroad was taken over by the Kansas City Southern railroad and still runs through Neosho today. Nearby Camp Crowder, no longer in use, was built to train members of the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. Newton County Historical Society museum is housed in the old Newton County's third jail building. Its exhibits, reflecting the early days of the county, include farming implements, household utensils and tools such as tools for construction of log cabins, churns, flax wheels, kitchen utensils and blacksmith, cooper, tailor, wagon maker and other craftsmen and tradesmen tools. World renowned artist Thomas Hart Benton is a notable citizen of Neosho and he donated some of his original lithographs, which now are on display in the Neosho High School, to the city. You can find colorful flowers planted in boxes throughout the city in front of many business firms and on top of trash containers.
