ABOUT THE AREA
Cameron did not start out as Cameron. Around 1854 a group of settlers laid out a town astride the proposed route of the Hannibal-to-St. Joseph railroad and called it Somerville. However when they found out that the grade at Somerville was deemed too steep and that trains could not stop there; the settlers dragged the three buildings, in the town of Somerville, a mile or so Southwest. Around 1855, they laid out the new town and gave it the name, Cameron. Cameron has eight parks and an Aquatic center. They are Beavers, Civic, Earl, Gazebo, Kelsey, McCorkle, Park Valley Baseball and Softball complex, Recreation park, the Skate park and the Soccer complex. One of them, McCorkle, dates back to around 1855 and now is the site of a Firemen’s Memorial which displays a 1928 Studebaker fire truck and other mementos. The aquatic center has an Olympic-size swimming pool and the Parkside Fury, a really long serpentine water slide.
