IS 540 and US 71 both run through Greenland, US 71 through the Eastern part and IS 540 through the Western part.

What is now the Greenland area was a part of the Arkansas Territory called Lovely County; however around 1828 the cherokee who inhabited the area were removed after reaching an agreement with the government. Settlers were encouraged to homestead here and the White River valley became a popular area for homesteading. Greenland has had several names beginning with Frog Pond, changed to Rugby by the railroad, then Staunton and finally around the end of the first decade of the 20th century to the present name. The economy of the city was based primarily on fruit production from the farms around Greenland. Many small landowners grew strawberries and many shipments of strawberries left from Greenland’s railroad depot. Raspberries, blackberries, and apples were grown on the farms as well. the town came to have two general stores, a blacksmith, a soda fountain, a dentist, and a few other companies. Drake Field, an executive airport, is located just to the East of the center of town.
