ABOUT THE AREA
One of the nation's largest fish hatcheries, the Joe Hogan Fish Hatchery is located in Lonoke. The Union Pacific historic train depot, formerly the Arkansas Rock Island Railroad depot, was built around 1912 to
replace the previous depot which had burned down. It now is the home of the Chamber of Commerce as well as other city offices and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is a little park next to the depot which was built as a memorial to the the stationmaster at this depot for 26 years. Passenger trains stopped here until late in 1967 and then it was a stop for self propelled passenger coaches until the summer of 1984. The new community center has a swimming pool, an exercise room, weight room, tennis courts and basketball courts.
