ABOUT THE AREA
Several structures in this town deserve a visit and will be worth it. Chatham Hall, circa 1894, as a girl's preparatory school remains in its original state and is a beautiful campus. The Pittsylvania County Clerks Office, circa 1813, located behind Town hall has been restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is now a museum holding over one thousand local artifacts relating to the county's history and memorabilia from every war. The architecture of this building is of special interest. It has dogtooth corbels for cornices with four rows of unmolded brick set at a 45-degree angle and shuttered windows of 18 panes. It is surrounded by a town park, with a pavilion for picnics, a gazebo for seating and a reconstructed tobacco barn. Of a later vintage is the Street Car diner. What is startling about it is that three brothers before World War II purchased and trucked a double-truck Birney streetcar utilized by the City of Danville between the years 1926-1938 to its present location; reconditioned and refurbished it as a diner. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it is now a visitors' center.
