ABOUT THE AREA
When a group of settlers met on the banks of Salt Creek, around 1859, to organize Lancaster County, which was located in the Territory of Nebraska; they selected a grassy plain near a natural salt basin as the county seat. The founders expected that there was the potential for a profitable salt collection industry to exist there, but they were wrong. However, Around 1867 a Capital Commission selected Lancaster, which was the original name of the area, as the state capital and renamed it Lincoln. In the city's early years homes and retail stores were all located in an area of the city called Haymarket; however when the economy grew in the 1870's and 1880's and railroads came to the city wholesale jobbing and manufacturing businesses replaced these. Several large warehouses are still standing in the Haymarket area. The Lancaster Event center is a huge complex which includes the Amy Countryman and multipurpose arenas, several large pavilions and an Expo hall. The facility is the scene of the Lancaster county fair, Figure 8 Auto races and musical performances. Another entertainment venue in the city is the Lied Center for Performing Arts. You can see dramatic and musical shows, dance performances, classical and pop concerts, performances of the Nebraska Repertory theater and lectures in this facility. There is yet another place in town for entertaining performances, the Pershing center. Above it all the state capitol tower stands out. The main campus of the University of Nebraska is located in the city. The college's athletic facilities, Memorial stadium and Bob Devaney Sports center, are the site of major college sports and attended by a good percentage of the city's residents.
