COMMENTS
Dakota County Courthouse is home to the county court and the district court (Box 66) and they are each part of their respective Sixth judicial district of Nebraska. When IS 129, US 20 and US 75 run together in Dakota county they meet US SR 35 just above Dakota City. SR 110 is a short road running between US 20 and SR 35.
ABOUT THE AREA
The Omaha's, part of the Sioux Nation of American Indians, were most likely the first people to live in the Dakota county area. Dakota county was at first part of the Missouri Territory and then became part of the Nebraska Territory in the Spring of 1854. Dakota County was authorized by the Nebraska legislature in the Spring of 1889 and even included parts of two other Nebraska counties. However later that year the other two counties were separated from Dakota county which was named after the Dakotah, another tribe of the Sioux Nation. One has to wonder why since the Omaha were the first inhabitants of the area. The city of Dakota City starts off Summer with a bang at its annual Cottonwood Days celebration in June. The event includes competitions in hot dog and cupcake eating contests, barbecue cook-off, horseshoe tournament and sand volleyball tournament. There are also kid’s activities, old-fashioned games and flea market booths to browse. Everyone wants to see the entries in the car and boat show but be sure to grab some of that kettle corn and cotton candy. Several live bands provide the musical entertainment in the evening and grab your partner and join the street dance held throughout the weekend.
