COMMENTS
In the halls of the Grant County courthouse you will find the county court (Box 97) and the district court (Box 139). Each is a part of their respective Twelfth judicial district of Nebraska. Believe it or not Grant county roads, SR 2 and SR 61, which meet in Hyannis.
ABOUT THE AREA
Grant county is primarily rural with an overall population of approximately 630. The county was defined by an act of the state legislature around 1887 about one year after the first Homestead claim was filed in the county. The area was as open range pastures by cattlemen who brought their herds from Texas. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad established the three major communities in the county from 1887 and on. Responding to the passage of the Kinkaid Act in 1904, settlers came to the county in hopes of staring farms or ranches but many were unsuccessful and left at the start of the 1930's. However, a few remained and bought up the vacant land to establish large ranches. At present ranching is the primary business of the region and the economy of Hyannis is based on serving the ranchers. Each August there is a rodeo held in conjunction with the county fair at the fairgrounds in Hyannis.
