ABOUT THE AREA
For many years the Shoshone, Flathead and Bannock Indians came back to Madison Valley each Spring. Lewis and Clark crossed Madison Valley around 1805. When gold was discovered in Alder Gulch in 1863, the gentleman, for whom the town is named, claimed a homestead along the Madison River which in no time at all became the Town of Ennis. It was incorporated around 1956. Today the town of Ennis offers visitors nearby fishing and hunting opportunities. Most of the economy here is based on raising prized Herefords and Black Angus along with crops of of hay and grain.
