ABOUT THE AREA
The Lewis and Clark expedition passed through the Wolf Point area in the Spring of 1805; followed by fur traders and the erection of Fort Union and other small posts along the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. However, no official notification of an official settlement in the area was written except for a notation on a map, of an Indian Fort, which seems to be located in a place called "Old Town". Through the years a small trading post on the Missouri river became a small village with permanent houses and buildings at "Old Town", built to accommodate a subagency for the Assiniboine people; created by an Indian agent around 1875 with a steam engine and sawmill. All of this changed with the arrival of the Great Northern railroad which deposited an old boxcar as a depot and built a section house at Wolf Point, North of "Old Town" around 1887. This spelled the end of "Old Town". When the Indian lands were opened to homesteading, around 1914, people poured into the area. The Wolf Point Area Historical Society museum's exhibits are intended to illustrate the life of the early-day settlers with its displays of antiques, heirlooms, artifacts of the early-day settlers and showcases of Indian culture. You will also come across the life size statue of cowboy artist Charles M. Russell in a hallway here. The city has several public parks for its resident's use including the Borge Park complex which has a tennis court, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts and a swimming pool.
