ABOUT THE AREA
You can count on it, it's official; Stevensville is the first permanent settlement in the state of Montana. Even several years before Montana became a state; Jesuit Missionaries settled the town to tend to the Bitter Root Salish Indians at their request. The first Jesuit priest arrived at present day Stevensville in the Fall of 1841 and named the settlement St. Mary’s. A few years later, an army contingent set up a trading post and military strong point named Fort Owen. The structures of St. Mary’s Mission and parts of Fort Owen still remain standing to this day. At Fort Owen State park you can also see the restored adobe and log structures, period furnishings and artifacts. On the First Friday in October the annual Stevensville Scarecrow Festival is held. Individuals, organizations, businesses and groups are invited to craft sculptures loosely based on the theme of scarecrows, crows and Fall themes. The public gets to vote for the 3 “Peoples’ Choice” awards. You might want to attend two of the big events held in this city every year; Stevensville Western Heritage Days in June and the Montana Rockies Bluegrass Association festival in April.
