Aztec District Court is one of the Eleventh District courts in San Juan county and is part of the New Mexico judicial district court system.

In the Summer of 1776 two friars were searching for a shorter overland route from Santa Fe to California. They never did achieve their goal but did establish a route for all other explorers and early settlers into the San Juan Basin region. Starting out as a trading post the town was established around 1887. By the 1890's the town had a blacksmith, drugstore, barber shop, livery barn, water-powered flour mill, saloon, mercantile store, two lawyers, a doctor and a dentist. A few years later people started to build their homes in the town. The town soon established an agricultural economy and with the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande railroad became a shipping point for sheep and cattle. In the 1920's the discovery of oil and natural gas near the town added to the economy. You can take in some exciting moments at the Aztec Speedway. On this clay track Stocks, Modfieds, SportMods, Hobbys, Sport Compact, New Mexico Mini Sprints and Powder Puff Stock Cars race on Saturday nights from March to October.
