SR 56 runs right along the western edge of Kulm and North of town meets SR 13.

Kulm was founded around 1892. The Soo Line land for a townsite and right of way and a settler contributed more land for the town. Since most of the settlers in the area were from either Kulm, Russia or from Kulm, Germany it was decided to name the railroad station Kulm. Kulm is a small town, under 400 residents, but everyone is comfy with one another. Even with its small size the town has a swimming pool and campground. The area is rich in places for for hunting, fishing, watersports, boating, hiking, exploration, birding and winter sports.
